Alex Svec '08
Head Coach
Since joining Andover in 2018, Coach Svec has helped guide the boys’ varsity volleyball team to a tremendous 27 – 10 record and three consecutive championship appearances, culminating in a championship victory in 2022. A four-year player and senior captain under former head coach Clyfe Beckwith; Svec was a member of the undefeated ‘07 championship squad. After Andover, Svec played for UMass Lowell’s division 1 club team where he was elected team captain and president of the club his Sophomore year, and eventually went on to coach the team for two seasons.
During his time at college Svec would frequently visit Andover practices to assist Clyfe [Beckwith], and, as he puts it “learn from one of the absolute best people at PA.” When asked what it means to take over for his former coach, and longtime mentor and friend: “It means a great deal. Clyfe made volleyball one of the most enjoyable aspects of Andover for so many students, including me. The saying ‘Clyfe Is Life’ exists for a reason. It was his mission to ensure athletes found as much success in their personal lives and academics as they did on the volleyball court, and it is my goal to carry on that tradition.”
Svec succeeds Clyfe Beckwith, who led the team from 1998 to 2018 and captured two New England championships, as only the second head coach in the boys’ varsity program.
