Andover places 9th out of 47 teams; has 5 individual placers
Andover finished 9th out of 47 teams at the New England championships this weekend. Co-captain Marisol Nugent ’20 led the way, winning the 144 lb weight class in the first ever girls division in the history of the NEISWA tournament. Nugent scored 3 first-period pins to claim 1st place, and was voted Outstanding Wrestler of the girls division by the coaches. Colin Nugent ’23 had a similarly impressive tournament with a 4-1 record; he pinned his opponents in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals; after a loss in the semifinals, he rallied with two more wins, defeating his opponent in the consi-semis 14-4, and winning the 3rd place match with a solid 10-4 decision. His only loss was to the eventual champion. Co-captain Eamon Garrity-Rokous ’20 went 4-2; he lost a tough 5-3 match in the quarterfinals, but wrestled back with three wins in a row, and eventually placed 4th. 195 Nick Buehler had a great showing at the tournament; he lost in the first round, and then pinned three opponents in a row, before losing another match and eventually placing 6th. Arnav Bhakta ’22 went 3-2, and in his final match of the day he had a 12-5 lead before eventually pinning his opponent to earn 7th. Thomas Radzik ’20 and Riggs McGrath ’21 also competed well for Andover, but did not place.
Marisol Nugent, Colin Nugent, and Nick Buehler continue their season and will travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania next weekend for National Preps.
