Andover goes 3-1 at home quint meet

Andover improved its record 8-4 today after going 3-1 in our last varsity home event of the season. Co-captain Sakina Cotton ’24 led the way with four wins. Andover started off the day against our Exeter rivals, coached by Justin Muchnick ’16. Andover opened the dual with a win, as Ethan Principal ’24 scored a first period pin at 138 and gave Andover the 6-0 lead. At 144 Dani Nugent ’25 wrestled a tough match, outscoring her opponent 9-3 and giving the team a 9-0 lead over Exeter. Andover lost the next two matches, one by pin and one by decision, and the score was tied 9-9. At 165 Nick Lima earned a first period pin, giving Andover a 15-9 lead. Andover lost the next two matches by pin, and Exeter took the lead 15-21. At 215 Sebastian Haferd ’25 earned a first period pin to tie it up 21-21. We lost at 285, but at 106 Alessandra Woo ’27 won by forfeit; at 113 Julian Rios ’26 pinned his opponent, and at 120 Sakina Cotton ’24 won by major dec. 15-6 over her opponent, giving Andover the lead 37-27. We lost the next match, but at 132 George Ryckman ’24 pinned his opponent in the first period to solidify the win 43-33. In an exhibition match Isa Matloff ‘24 pinned her opponent in 1:37.

Andover took on Roxbury Latin next. Unfortunately Andover only won five of the fourteen bouts. At 215 Sebastian Haferd ’25 put the first team points on the board with an exciting second period pin. At 285 Byron Johnson ’25 pinned his opponent; at 106 Julian Rios ’26 pinned in 29 seconds, and at 113 Sakina Cotton ’24 earned an exciting 3rd period pin. At 138 Ethan Principal pinned his opponent in 1:11, but Andover lost the dual meet 30-53. In an exhibition match Suhaila Cotton ’24 defeated her opponent 8-5.

In the third meet of the day Andover took on Deerfield Academy. Elliot Chung, James Bae, Sebastian Haferd, Byron Johnson, and Alessandra Woo all won by forfeit. At 113 Julian Rios ’26 pinned his opponent in 15 seconds; at 120 Sakina Cotton ’24 pinned her opponent in 29 seconds; and at 144 Dani Nugent ’25 pinned her opponent in 34 seconds, making the final team score 48-33. In an exhibition match Isa Matloff ’24 pinned her opponent in 1:07.

In the final meet of the day Andover wrestled against the Hyde School. James Bae, Nick Lima, Winston Wall, Sebastian Haferd, Julian Rios, and Suhaila Cotton all won by forfeit. At 120 Sakina Cotton ’24 pinned her opponent in 25 seconds; at 132 George Ryckman ’24 pinned his opponent in 43 seconds; at 138 Magnus Julin ’25 pinned his opponent in 28 seconds; and at 144 Dani Nugent pinned her opponent in 2:31, and the team won the dual meet 60-24. In exhibition matches Ethan Principal ’24 and Bella Shmuylovich ’26 both pinned their opponents.
