Great win on Smoyer

Andover, MA - The Big Blue played inspired soccer this afternoon on Smoyer Field against visitors Holderness. It took the Big Blue 15 minutes to get on the scoresheet, and it did so via Ellis Denby '24, who collected his second goal of the season after receiving a pass from Christien Merritt '22. Denby drove past two defenders and calmly finished the play by tucking the ball into the bottom right corner. Merritt would also contribute with two goals of his own. His first came off a great run made by teammate Zane Matraji '24, who beat his defender to cross the ball and find the feet of Merritt, who, with a delicate touch, put the ball in the bottom right corner. Matraji '24 would add to the lead after a fantastic individual effort inside the penalty box where he beat his defender and finished the play by taking a shot to the keeper's near post. Moments later, Merrit '22 would return the favor to Matraji as he beat his defender on the right side of the 18-yard box to deliver a cross that Matraji '24 met on the other end. The goal scored was Matraji's '24 second of the day and second of the season. At the half, the Big Blue was up 4-0. In the second stanza, Alex Coman '24 received a brilliant through ball from Denby '24 to score his first season. In his scoring effort, Coman '24 demonstrated composure and a neat touch to finish the play. After an excellent inside-the-box individual effort, Ryan Lam beat his defender and finished the play with a shot to the keeper's far post to wrap up the scoring. The goal marks Ryan's first of the season. Today was a solid team performance, the product of a great week of practice. BVS hopes to see some of you at our next match versus Taft this coming Saturday. Forward we go!
