A Feisty End to the Season
The JV3 boys’ soccer team finished out their season with a 1-1 tie at Deerfield. The 2 hour bus ride west passed through some gorgeous foliage and the hills surrounding the Deerfield campus were a glorious array of autumnal colors and fields were a lovely contrasting green, setting the stage for a feisty game of soccer. Down a number of players due to injuries, the Big Blue took the field with enthusiasm. The team played tough against a bigger Deerfield squad with some outstanding performances. Bruce McLaren had another outstanding match in goal. Center backs Javier Gomez-Amuedo and Cyrus Law were fearless and both cleared balls off the goal line in the match. Dareus Conover, Mak Matsuzawa, and Sahi Kathika faced down the Deerfield wingers while playing on the back line. Brady Nelson, Kwadjo Adjepong, Nico Benett, and Julian Otto were offensive threats on the wing throughout. Teo Choi, Sam Frangakis, and Kachi Ikekpeazu provided all the energy up top. Caleb Beroukahim, Jonathan Oh, Daniel Peng, and Rayyan Siddiq held down the central midfield. Fortune Udeh was unable to play due to injury but contributed many coaching points for his teammates. The lone Andover goal came when the team was down 0-1, and Nelson was fouled just inside the box. Gomez-Amuedo struck the resulting penalty kick forcefully into the goal to tie the game. The team has improved their skills, their game tactics, and their support of one another over the season. Coaches Greenberg and McHugh are proud of the players’ efforts and applaud their growth in their first term at Andover.
