Strong start to the season for GXC
The Phillips Academy girls' cross country team (GXC) traveled to Derryfield Park to compete in the Manchester Invitational, one of the best cross country invitationals in New England, and ran some outstanding performances.
Starting off the day with the girls' freshmen 2-mile race, Molly Nara ('30) led the way completing the challenging course in 13:02 and taking 14th place. Following Molly with impressive performances, Eleanor McBride ('30), Myra Zheng ('30), Alex Burger ('30), Jessica Hong ('30), Emilia Petrokas ('30) and Emily Ke ('30). The Freshman team finished 3rd place out of 13th.
Next up we had the JV "C" race. We featured four runners who competed hard over the 2-mile course, Eveline Chung ('29), Mari Uchino-Garcia ('29), Kareen Kapoor ('29), and Nandini Sharma ('29).
Following the JV "C" race, the JV "B" race featured a huge 1st place win from Anya Casey ('27)!! She led the entire pack of runners from mile 1, never dropping her pace or smile. She ran an impressive time of 21:37, 25 seconds ahead of the next finisher! In addition to Anya helping the team to their 4th place finish, we had amazing performances by Claire Donovan ('29) in 8th place, Emma Hong ('28), Fatima Bah ('29), Kalista Kuemmerle ('28) and Claire Bancroft ('28).
In the final girls' race of the day, the GXC Varsity squared off against 23 teams in the Large School Varsity race. Sophie Stetson ('29) and Maddie Marshall ('29) led the way for Andover with promising early-season running. Hannah Jung ('28) and Maeve Burns ('30) were next in for GXC with an outstanding season debut race! Allyssa Katana ('27) finished next showing off her consistent summer work by crushing her 5k personal record by over 2.5 minutes! Rounding out our top 7 were strong performances by Sophia Schneeweiss ('29) and Michelle Oh ('29).
