GVS shines in season opener, 6-1
A true team effort was the story of the day as GVS earned a 6-1 victory over the Groton School on Smoyer Field.
Early in the first half, senior Mura Daisely set the tone for the day - winning the ball and blasting a perfect shot out of reach of the Groton keeper. Ten minutes later, Keaghan Murphy '27 served a great ball to captain Wylie Roossien '26. Wylie headed the ball to the far post finding teammate Lola Aguirre '26 for a simple tap in, extending the score to 2-0. With five minutes remaining in the first half, sophmores Isabel Park and Audrey Gotha came off the bench to help extend the lead. Isabel recognized the Groton goalie was off her line and sent a stellar 40 yard ball over the top to the weak side where Gotha kept it simple, slotting it into the goal.
At half time, the team doubled down in their focus with the intention of playing a complete game through the final whistle. At the 46th minute, midfield Elizabeth Wodarski slotted a perfect ball to Roossien who notched her first goal of the day - followed by two more goals by Wylie at the 48th and 60th minute. Roossien's hat trick (and assist) earned her Player of the Game. That said, it was an incredible and full team effort from goalkeeper Deli Russell '26 earning the win in net and backs, Keaghan Murphy, Nina Oswanski, captain Emily Decker, Lily Loughlean and Cedar Leckerling consistently shutting down the Groton frontrunners. Ashley Dimnaku '27 shined in the midfield with her strong endline to endlines effort. Shout out to all those earning their first-ever GVS minutes in their career: Emma Morrison, Maddie Shin, Emma Sharon as well as Leckerling, Park and Loughlean.
The team looks forward to returning to Smoyer on Saturday versus perenially strong Class B opponent, Rivers School.
Thank you to all our family, friends and fans who came out to support - including bringing us delicious treats (snickerdoodles!!) at the end of the game. It was also amazing to see former GVS captain Hannah Guzzi '17 on the sideline with her baby (!) - cheering on both her former school AND her former GVS teammate, Katie Kreider '17. Katie is the head coach of the Groton School. #gvsfamforever
