Three goal second half effort propels GVS to win over Deerfield

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Deerfield capitalized on their first corner kick of the game to push ahead early in the first half of play, 1-0. GVS stayed focus on the game plan and created a phenomenal chance when Marie-Eve Marleau '22 slipped Emily Mara a pass into the 18 yard box where Mara was taken down for a PK. Captain Mary Stuart Kerrigan '22 put away her second PK of the season to knot the game at 1-1 at the mid-way point.

The second half of play saw more offensive pressure thanks to the relentless efforts of Lily Haik, Myra Bhathena, Emily Mara, Eliza Dow, Kennedy Smith, Marie-Eve Marleau and Kendall Toth. Through the mid-field Emma Robinson, Lulu Rourke, Esme Huh, Jazzy Cormier, and Kelly Bu did a great job of winning the 50/50 balls and maintaining the tempo of the game.

Emily Mara created the opportunity that led to the second Big Blue goal as she found captain Bhathena on the weak side who blasted the ball to the far netting. Soon after Mara was again in the mix following a blast by Lily Haik that produced a rebound Mara put away. Haik was back at it again scoring an unassisted goal that kept the game out of reach. Emily Mara was named Player of the Game!

The defensive line of Mary Stuart Kerrigan, Tori Darling, Athalia Esty, Lola Ademilola, and Kate McCool kept the Deerfield offense away from creating any dangerous chances. Sofia Traversari-Sotomayor '23 earned the win in net AND enjoyed having her parents and sister on the sidelines from their home-country of Nicaragua.

Thanks to our family and friends who traveled a long distance to cheer us on...in the rain, no less. Thanks to the Traversari-Sotomayor family for the delicious meal at the end of the game as well as Jazzy Cormier's grandparents for once again, delicious treats from Vermont! The Marleau family was cheering us on - as always on live-stream - from Montreal and we thank them too for an amazing Friday night Italian dinner/fire pit event.

The team looks forward to their final game of the season on Graves Field this Wednesday v. Class A power Nobles.

Happy Halloween!
