Class of 2022 leads the way in 1-0 season opening win!

GVS kicked off the 2021 fall interscholastic season with an exciting 1-0 over the Groton Pelicans on Smoyer Field. The team focused on creating numerous offensive opportunities and pushing numbers to the box and their persistent efforts paid off. Midway through the second half, upper midfielder Emma “Robi” Robinson found forward Marie-Eve Marleau ’22 who beat a talented Groton keeper, Rose Shingles ’23.

While the offense created much excitement on the day, it was the backline play of Emily Kelly ’22, Mya Ademilola ’22, Kate McCool ’23, Athalia Esty ’22, and Tori Darling ’22 as well as smart goaltending by Sofia Traversari-Sotomayor ’23 that led the way. Great communication played a key role in Andover keeping the ball out of their defensive third.

Earning their first-ever minutes for GVS were Kelly Bu ’23, Emma Robinson ’23, Mya Ademilola ’22, Marie-Eve Marleau ’22, Kate McCool ’23, Lulu Rourke ’23, Emily Mara ‘25, Esme Huh ’22, Jazzy Cormier ’24, Kennedy Smith ’22, and Tori Darling ’22.

Player of the Game was new upper Kate McCool.

We are grateful for the tremendous showing of our fans and the delicious snacks provided by the Robinson family post-game.

Additional highlights include seeing former outside back superstar/GVS captain Rachel Chang ’19 on the sidelines. It was also a thrill to see two GVS teammates giving back to the game that they gave so much to – Hannah Guzzi ’14 and Katie Kreider ’14 are now assistant coaches at Groton School. “Guzzi” and “Kreider” were four-year superstars for the Big Blue (as well as multi-sport athletes!) and went on to amazing collegiate careers at Amherst College and Hamilton College, respectively. See a group picture of the three alums here.

GVS looks forward to returning to action this Saturday at home versus 2019 NEPSAC Class B champions Rivers School.
