14 Andover wrestlers place at New Englands
Twenty-two Andover wrestlers traveled to Greens Farms Academy to compete in the New England Championships. In the co-ed division, Andover placed 6th out of 44 teams, our highest placement in several years. We had 11 wrestlers compete in the co-ed division, and five of them placed top 8. Leading the way was co-captain Julian Rios ’26 at 120, who won his first three matches by pin or technical fall, before falling in the finals 0-4 to a tough opponent from New York Military Academy. At 113 Devin Akyali ’29 outperformed his 6 seed by placing 3rd. His only loss of the tournament was in the quarterfinals to the eventual 2nd place finisher; he won his other four matches in a 31 second pin, 2:04 pin, 10-0 major decision, and 9-6 decision to place 3rd.
At 126 Brady Haskell ’28 placed 4th. He won his first match of the day with a 1:51 pin. He lost in the quarterfinals, but rallied with a 17-1 technical fall and a 1:17 pin. He lost his final match of the day to a tough opponent from NMH. At 285 Geza Labancz ’26 went 4-2, winning all four of his matches by pin to place 4th. At 113 Christian Robinson ’28 went 3-2, winning his matches by pin, 11-5 decision, and 3-2 decision to place 7th. His 3-2 win was over an opponent he lost to earlier in the season. Rios ’26, Haskell ’28, and Akyali ’29 have qualified for National Preps and will compete next weekend. Also competing well for Andover were Caleb Beroukhim ’27 (3-2), Narek Hambardzumyan ’26 (2-2), Shock Ingram ’26 (2-2), James Bae ’26 (1-2), Reese York ’26 (0-2), Sean Flynn ’27 (0-2).
In the girls division, Team Abbot entered 11 wrestlers and placed 2nd as a team out of 28 teams. We had four individual champions in the tournament. At 100 lbs Serra Akyali went 4-0 to win her weight class. She won her first three matches by pin. Her finals match was won in overtime with a late takedown. At 138 Cindy Zhou ’27 went 2-0 with a pin in the semifinals and a pin in the finals to win her weight class. At 165 Bella Shmuylovich ’26 went 2-0, with a pin in the semifinals and a come-from-behind pin in the finals to win her weight class. At 185 Toni Elliott ’27 went 3-0 with 3 first period pins to win her weight class. At 126 Ophelia Lee ’26 went 3-1 to place 2nd; she won her first three matches by pin, and one by DQ, before falling in the finals. At 132 Tasha Bohorad also went 3-1 to place 2nd, winning her three matches by pin before falling in the finals to a tough opponent from Choate. At 107 Margaret Tsien ’26 went 3-1 to place 3rd, winning her matches by pin. At 114 Gauri Bhakta ’28 went 2-2 and placed 4th, winning her matches by pin and a 5-2 decision. At 152 Lisa De Boer ’26 also took 4th place. Also competing well for Team Abbot were Kierra Ong ’29 (0-2) and Mari Uchino Garcia ’29 (1-2). Our 9 place winners will compete at National Preps next weekend.
