2 champs and 5 others advance to day 2 of Nationals

11 Andover wrestlers entered the National Prep Wrestling Championships on Friday. At 106, Julian Rios '26 led the way with a pin in the round of 32, a pin in the round of 16, and an exciting 5-3 decision in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals on day 2.

In the girls division, Team Abbot ended day 1 with two champs: At 185 McKenzie Williams '24 went 2-0 with two pins to earn her first National Championship. At 235 Eleanor DeHoog '24 went 2-0 with two pins to win her third straight National Prep title.

At 138 Dani Nugent had a bye to the semis, and then pinned her opponent in the semifinals to advance to finals on day 2.

At 165 Toni Elliott '27 had a pin in the quarterfinals and a pin in the semifinals to advance to finals on day 2.

At 107 Suhaila Cotton '24 pinned in the round of 16 and in the quarterfinals; she lost in the semifinals, but rallied with a pin in the consi-semis. She'll wrestle for 3rd place on day 2.

At 114 Sakina Cotton '24 pinned her opponent in the quarterfinals; she lost in the semifinals, but then pinned her opponent in the consi-semis to advance to the 3rd place match on day 2.

At 120 Tasha Bohorad '26 lost to the 1 seed in the round of 16; she then pinned her next two opponents, and won her third match 4-3 in overtime. SHe lost her consi-semifinals match to a tough opponent from Blair. Tasha goes 3-2 and does not advance to day 2.

At 126 Julia Carmona '24 lost in the quarterfinals to the 3 seed; in the consolation round she rallied with a pin and with a 5-2 decision, before losing in the consi-semis to a tough opponent from Texas. Julia goes 2-2 and does not advance to day 2.

At 132 Ophelia Lee '26 wrestled tough, but went 0-2; at 152 Bella Shmuylovich '26 took on two strong opponents, but went 0-2 and does not advance to day 2.

At the end of day 1 Andover is 2nd overall in the team score in the girls division.
