Andover takes 3rd place with 1 champion and 4 other finalists

Andover brought 31 wrestlers to the Class A league tournament; 16 wrestlers entered the Prep Division, and 15 wrestlers entered the Girls Division. Wrestlers needed to place top 4 at the tournament or have a 2/3 winning record in order to qualify for New Englands next weekend.

In the Prep Division, Andover had 4 wrestlers make it to the finals. At 106 lbs Julian Rios ’26 pinned his Choate opponent in 36 opponent, and he won by technical fall 15-0 over his Northfield Mount Hermon opponent to claim the Class A title. At 113, Sakina Cotton ’24 went 3-1, with pins over Deerfield and Phillips Exeter, to take 2nd place. At 138 Dani Nugent ’25 went 2-1, with pins over Hyde School and Deerfield to take 2nd place. At 144 Ethan Principal ’24 went 2-1, with pins over Exeter and Deerfield to take 2nd place. All four of our finalists qualify for New Englands.

At 132 George Ryckman went 3-1; he pinned his St. Paul’s opponent in the quarterfinals. After falling to his Choate opponent in the semifinals, he came back and won two matches by pin to place 3rd and qualify for New Englands. At 165, Nick Lima ’25 lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion; he came back and won 3 matches by pin to take 3rd place and qualify for New Englands. At 144, Bodhi Beroukhim ’25 lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion. He then won 3 matches in a row, including a come-from-behind victory at the buzzer, to qualify for New Englands. After an injury he defaulted to 4th place.

At 138 Magnus Julin ’25 won his match in the quarterfinals, but fell in the semifinals to the eventual champion. He lost in the consi-seminfinals, but then pinned his St. Paul’s opponent to place 5th. Because of his 10-5 record throughout the season Magnus qualifies for New Englands. At 157 James Bae ’26 went 3-2. He defeated his Deerfield opponent 4-2; he pinned his WMA opponent in the first period, and he pinned his St. Paul’s opponent to place 5th. At 285 Byron Johnson ’25 went 2-2, including a pin over his Choate opponent, to place 5th.

At 120 Narek Hambardzumyan ’27 went 1-3 to place 6th. He pinned his St. Paul’s opponent in the second period. At 215 Sebastian Haferd ’25 took 6th, and at 285 Isaac Leeper ’27 took 6th.

In the Girls Division Andover had 7 finalist. At 107 Suhaila Cotton ’24 pinned her 3 opponents in less than 2 minutes total to claim her Class A title. At 126 Julia Camrona ’24 pinned 2 opponents to win her weight class; and at 235 Eleanor DeHoog pinned her opponents to win her weight class. Nadia Choophungart ’24, McKenzie Williams ’24, Destiny Covington ’26, Tasha Bohorad ’26, and Bella Shmuylovich ’26 all took 2nd place. At 107 Alessandra Woo ‘27 had an exciting come from behind victory at the buzzer to place 3rd; Luke Christodoulou ’24 and Ophelia Lee ’26 also placed 3rd. Lilly Villanueva ’25 and Lisa DeBoer ’26 both placed 4th.
