Andover comes in 2nd in co-ed and girls division; 6 total champions
Sixteen wrestlers entered the co-ed division of the Class A league championships. Andover had two champions and thirteen other placers to finish 2nd place as a team. At 106 lbs Serra Akyali ’28 became the first girl in Andover wrestling history to win a Class A title in the co-ed division. She defeated her opponent 3-0 and 3-1 to win the title. At 120 lbs Julian Rios ’26 also made Andover wrestling history, becoming the first Andover wrestler to win four Class A titles. He won with two pins and a technical fall.
Andover also had 3 silver medalists. At 113 lbs Devin Akyali ’29 pinned three of his opponents on route to the finals, where he lost to his opponent from NMH. At 126 lbs Brady Haskell ’28 pinned his opponents in the quarterfinals and semifinals, before losing to his opponent from NMH in the finals. At 285 lbs Geza Labancz ’26 pinned his two opponents on route to the finals, where he lost to his opponent from NMH.
Andover had four wrestlers place 3rd. At 113 lbs Christian Robinson went 2-2 in a round robin bracket of five, winning his two matches by technical fall to take 3rd place. At 138 lbs Caleb Beroukhim ’27 won his 3rd place match in a 10-2 decision. At 157 lbs James Bae ’26 went 3-1 to place 3rd; his only loss was in the semifinals to the eventual champion. He won all of his matches by pin. At 165 lbs Sean Flynn ’27 went 3-1 with three pins to also place 3rd.
At 144 lbs Reese York ’26 went 2-2 to place 4th. His two wins were by pin. At 190 lbs Shock Ingram ’26 also went 2-2 and placed 4th, winning his matches by pin.
At 132 lbs Narek Hambardzumyan ’26 went 2-2 and placed 5th, winning his matches 6-1 and 4-1. At 165 lbs Andretti Candelario ’28 went 2-2 and placed 5th, winning his matches 5-3 and 4-2. At 215 Nick Marini ’28 went 2-2, winning his matches by pin and medical forfeit to place 5th.
At 144 David Siahaan ’27 placed 6th, winning his match in a 7-1 decision.
In the girls division Team Abbot also came in 2nd place as a team, with four individual champions. At 138 lbs Cindy Zhou ’27 went 4-0 with three pins and a 7-5 decision to claim the Class A title. At 152 lbs Lisa de Boer ’26 went 2-0 with two pins to become champion. At 165 lbs Bella Shmuylovich ’26 went 3-0 with a pin, a 10-5 decision, and a back-and-forth come from behind pin in the last ten seconds to win the Class A title. At 185 lbs Toni Elliott ’27 went 2-0 with two quick pins to place 1st.
At 132 lbs Tasha Bohorad ’26 went 2-1 to place 2nd, with a pin and an 8-0 major decision on route to the finals, where she fell to a nationally ranked opponent. At 114 Gauri Bhakta ’28 went 3-2 with three pins to place 3rd. Destiny Covington ’26 also placed 3rd. At 114 Kierra Ong ’29 went 2-4 to place 4th, with two pins. At 126 Ophelia Lee ’26 went 1-2 before medically forfeiting her matches, placing 4th. Also competing well for Andover were Reina Hisada '28 and Mel de Souza '28.
