Andover goes 5-0 at Avon Holiday duals

Andover advanced it’s season record to 6-1 today after winning five straight dual meets at the Avon Holiday Duals. Andover started the day against the host school, Avon Old Farms. At 106 Serra Akyali ’28 won by forfeit, and at 113 Christian Robinson ’28 won by fall. At 120 lbs, Devin Akyali ’29 was losing 4-13, when he tied it up and finally pinned his opponent with only 30 seconds left in the match, giving Andover the lead 18-0. Julian Rios ’26 followed up with a pin of his own, and Brady Haskell ’28 won by fofeit at 132. At 138 Reese York ’26 also won by pin, giving Andover a 36-0 lead over Avon. Andover lost the next two bouts, but then co-captain James Bae ’26 defeated his opponent 15-4, to keep Andover in the lead 40-11. Andover lost the next four bouts, but then heavyweight Geza Labancz ’26 pinned his opponent to secure the victory, 46-32.

Next Andover took on Canterbury School, who was down many wrestlers due to illness. We won many of the matches by forfeit, and at 120 Devin Akyali ’29 won by fall; at 138 Brady Haskell ’28 won by fall; and at 285 Geza Labancz ’26 won by fall, winning Andover the dual 78-6. Andover also wrestled the American School for the Deaf, who only has three wrestlers. We won many of those matches by forfeit. At 132 Narek Hambardzumyan ’26 won his match by technical fall 17-1; at 157 James Bae won his match by fall; at 285 Geza Labancz won his match by fall, winning Andover the dual 83-0.

In the final match in the bracket Andover took on Brunswick. 120 Devin Akyali ’29, 126 Julian Rios ’26, and 132 Brady Haskell ’28 all won quick pins to give Andover the early lead 18-0. Andover lost the next three matches and Brunswick started closing the gap, trailing 18-12. At 157 co-captain James Bae ’26 won an exciting 13-3 major decision at the buzzer, giving Andover an extra team point. Andover lost the next four bouts and was trailing 22-34, but then at 285 Geza Labancz ’26 won a dominant 11-2 match. 106 Serra Akyali ’28 followed up with a quick pin, and at 113 Christian Robinson ’28 won by technical fall 17-0, to push Andover back into the lead 37-32 to win the dual meet.

In the crossover bracket, Andover took on Trinity Pawling School. At 126 Julian Rios ’26 won by forfeit; 132 Brady Haskell ’28 won by fall. At 138 Reese York ’26 lost a heartbreaking overtime match 13-16. At 144 Caleb Beroukhim was losing 2-9 when he took his opponent down to his back and pinned him with 30 seconds to spare. At 157 James Bae ’26 won his match by fall. We won 6 more matches by forfeit, and then Devin Akyali ’29 closed out the dual with a technical fall 17-0 to win the dual 65-15.

In exhibition matches, Toni Elliott ’27 won three matches by pin; Gentry Thatcher ’27 won by pin; Nick Marini ’28 won by pin; Shayan Ahmed ’29 won by pin.
