Andover Boys travel to Exeter and bring home a 5-2 victory

Playing short-handed, the Andover Boys Varsity A team traveled in the rain to longtime rival Exeter to play indoors. Andover got on the board early, with the teams of Eddie Wang ‘24/Chase Burke ‘25 and Avery Zheng ‘25/Kevin Niu ‘25 gaining 8-3 wins at #2 and #3 doubles, securing the doubles point aaa Andover went up 1-0 heading into singles play.

Andover then got off to a hot start at singles, with #1-#4 each taking the first set against Exeter. Co-captain Alex Zhu ‘23 then gave Andover its second point with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 victory at #2 singles. Exeter then scored its first point of the match, with a 10-8 third set super tie-breaker victory at #4 singles against Andover’s Jeremy Liao ‘24. Exeter then seemed poised to possibly even the match until Avery Zheng, after being down 1-4 in the second set, came roaring back to win 6-4, 7-6 (2). Exeter then scored its second point at #1 singles, as Eddie Wang fought through an injury to complete his match but fell short, losing the third set super-tiebreaker 10-7.

With Andover up 3-2, the match came down to the remaining two singles matches. Juniors Kevin Niu and Chase Burke each gutted out two-set victories to give Andover a 5-2 win. Andover moves to 7-1 for its season record and will look to add to it this Friday when they travel to Roxbury Latin.
