GVS jumps into 2018 season with College Showcase friendly versus Milton Academy

On September 9, 2018 at 11:30 AM

The first annual NEPSAC College Showcase kicked off at the FC Stars complex in Lancaster MA on Sunday, September 9. Every GVS player saw time - many in new positions - as they take one step closer to season opener on the road versus Groton on Wednesday.

Sunday proved to be a great opportunity for GVS players and coaches as they faced a talented ISL opponent, Milton Academy. Newcomers Jess Moses and Hailey Lovell stepped onto the field with nine returning varsity players for the start. Notably co-captain Allison Zhu and upper Rachel Chang stepped up to the task of moving to the backfield alongside Madison Bourassa '20 who organized the backfield. Co-Captain Elise Macdonald provided tremendous leadership and play for 80 minutes of the game in the midfield - and perhaps the most dangerous chance of all with a well-struck ball that clanged off the post in the second half of play. Lower Karoline Conte stood out with gutsy play that inspired her teammates to high press the Milton squad and upper Isabella DiBenedetto demonstrated great vision/soccer IQ with numerous well-played balls throughout the midfield. Up front, Maddy Silveira, Isobel Glass and Lovell worked hard in the final third of the field to create dangerous chances for the Blue. Upper Emily Hardy earned a shut-out during the first forty minutes. In addition, GVS saw great play from all players off the bench - Kylie Quinlan, Myra Bhathena, MaryStuart Kerrigan and Katherine Marquis all provided additional bursts in the offensive third and Isabel Castro stepped in the backfield to earn important minutes as she returns from injury. GVS was also excited to see returning lower Kennedy Everson grab forty minutes of play in the second half after spending much of her 9th grade year sidelined with injury. Thanks to the MacDonald family for providing cold gatorade, delicious fruit and an outing to Kimball Farms for ice cream post-match. We are also thankful to JoAnn Bourassa for great pics from the day. We are excited for the season and can't wait to hit the road on Wednesday to meet the Zebras. GO BIG BLUE!
