Big Blue wins title at Northern Tournament

Six individual champions led the Big Blue wrestlers to the team title at the 2019 Northern Invitational Tournament held at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine, on Saturday. The Bue scored 221 points to best a field of 15 teams.
Six individual champions led the Big Blue wrestlers to the team title at the 2019 Northern Invitational Tournament held at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine, on Saturday. The Bue topped a field of fifteen teams, scored 221 points, and won 37 matches on the day. Phillips Exeter, which rested several starters, placed second. Champions for PA included Arnav Bhakta at 106lb, Ellerman Mateo at 126, Vinny Marino at 132, Ramphis Medina at 195, and co-captains Eamon Garrity-Rokous at 152 and Pablo Sanchez at 182. Bhakta and Mateo won titles as first-year wrestlers. Garrity-Rokous pinned all four of his foes. Also placing for PA were Jack O’Neil, 2nd at 145; Matt Suri, 4th at 120lb; Gordon Paiva, 5th at 138; Nick Buehler, 5th at 195; and Calvin Yang, 5th at 285. The team score was close until PA went on a 9-2 run in finals matches, highlighted by a thrilling triple-overtime finals win by Bhakta, and pins by Paiva, Garrity-Rokous, and Medina. Andover is well-prepared for the Class “A” league tournament, at home next Saturday, February 9th.
