Cohen reaches the top twelve
Adam Cohen ’18 reached the round of 12 to lead the Big Blue effort at the 83rd annual National Prep School Wrestling Championships held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Feb. 23-24. Competing at 220 pounds, Cohen opened his tournament with a solid 7-3 victory before losing a decision to the #4 seed. Dropping into the consolation bracket, he won two straight close bouts, by scores of 1-0, and 3-1, before facing his rival from Phillips Exeter in the round of twelve, and losing a hard-fought match. Co-captain Pierce Bausano ’18 also opened the tournament with a win in his first-round bout at 182 pounds, by the score of 6-0, before dropping a second-round bout to the #3 seed. Fellow captain Pablo Sanchez ’19 was perhaps Andover’s biggest surprise of the tournament. Selected as a wild-card entry at 195 pounds, Sanchez showed a great effort in his first-round match, a 12-6 loss to a quality foe. In the consolations, he won a bout by injury forfeit, then his next match by the score of 8-2. He dropped his fourth bout of the tournament to the #7 seed, 10-3. The Blue finished 52nd in the team standings, among 129 competing teams from across the country. Bausano ends his illustrious Andover career as a four-year starter, two-year captain, and two-time National Prep tournament qualifier. He won 67 bouts in a Big Blue uniform. Cohen led the team this season with 23 wins and finished his career with 55 victories for the Blue. Sanchez ends his Upper season with a record of 21-10 and has 35 career victories with a season to go. Complete results from the tournament can be found on Flo Arena (http://arena.flowrestling.org/). Sanchez will lead eight returning starters for the Blue next season, including Marisol Nugent, Jack O’Niell, Alex El Adl, Nick Masri, Tyler Yung, Gordon Paiva, and Matt Suri.
