It was a cold and blustery day at the Sorota Track, yet the Andover boys laid down an early season 79-65 point victory over local rivals from Andover High to kick off the 2017 season. While a number of athletes posted strong early season times and marks, the throwing events proved particularly impressive on the afternoon. Michael McGreal ‘17, TJ Urbanik ‘17, and Ajay Menon ‘17 would combine for a 1-2-3 Andover sweep of the Javelin, posting marks of 171-10, 164-00, and 163-02, respectively. All three of those marks surpassed the winning throw at last year’s NEPSTA Division I Championship. Not to be outdone, senior Noah Ward ’17 captured the Shot Put (55-03.50) and Discus (166-10), while teammate John Rex ’17 snagged third behind Ward in each event. On the track, the 4x100m team of Alessandro Ciccia ‘18, Turner Corbett ‘17, William Hartemink ’17, and Urbanik combined to claim the victory in a time of 45.20, setting the tone for the spring on the day. Corbett would go on to win the 100m in 11.27, while lower Josh Thomas ‘19 would claim a runner-up finish in the 200m (24.90) ahead of Corbett, who took third. Freshman Alex Fleury’s ‘20 victory in the 800m was perhaps the highlight of the distances races, where he posted a time of 2:05.08. Jacob Buehler ‘19 would lead a 1-2-3 sweep of the 3000m, while Sam Tobin ‘18 and Nathan Goldthwaite ‘18 claimed second (4:27.68) and third (4:30.85) in the 1500m. The 4x400m Relay team of Goldthwaite, Benjamin Zhang ‘17, Fleury, and Tobin would finish off the day with a victory, posting a time of 3:52.15. Andover will be back in action next weekend, where they will host Taft and Deerfield.
