Andover Wins Clash of 2018 New England Champions

Brunswick, the 2018 Class B New England Champions, came to campus on Sat. May 4th for the first time to play a dual match, and Andover, the reigning Class A champions, pulled out a 4-3 win with Hudson Elegant again clinching, this time playing at five.

Andover took the doubles point, with air-tight aggressive play at number two from Aidan and Mac, and then some determined and unerring defense from Adam and Hudson at three. In singles, Hayden had a great time with a long but finally losing battle against Ben Powis at one, Aidan played huge against a tough Evan Lee at two, winning in straights, and Nash ran into a great performance by Glanville at three. Moving up to fourth, Mac played his best tennis of the year against Gunningham, losing by a whisker in a super tie-breaker, 11-9. But Mathis Weber had played brilliantly in his first Varsity A match, winning 6-1, 6-0 and all we needed was one more match. Hudson and Ed Nagler played a nail-biter and Huddy prevailed playing error-free and making big shots when he had to. It was a great day of close matches and we were all exhilarated by the competitiveness and great sportsmanship. Doubles: 1. Hayden Gura ‘20/Nash Johnson ‘20 vs. Powis/Lee, L 8-4 2.
