3 New Pool Records / 2 All-American Swims

Andover concludes double-header with 35 additional season-best performances.

(Andover, MA) — For the third consecutive year, the Andover Boys’ Varsity Swimming & Diving Team competed against St. John’s Prep, owner of 12 of the last 13 Massachusetts State Championships, on Friday night and then turned around to face Deerfield Academy on Saturday afternoon.



This double-header is a great challenge and great preparation for the Eastern Championships. Friday night’s meet at St. John’s lasted a total of 64 minutes—diving included—and Andover walked away with 28 season-best performances. Saturday afternoon’s meet at home against Deerfield included an additional 35 season-best performances.



Four particular highlights from Saturday’s meet:



Arnold Su ’20 swam 21.35 in the 50 Freestyle to break Andover’s TJ Durkin’s twenty-year-old pool record!



Lance Freiman ’19 swam 50.46 in the 100 Butterfly to break Andover’s Tim Wynter’s pool record from 2013!



Freiman (21.61) and Su (20.59) combined with Jack Warden ’19 (21.81) and Neil Simpson ’19 (21.50) to surpass the All-American consideration time standard in the 200 Freestyle Relay: 1:25.51.



Sam Donchi ’20 (47.69) joined Su (45.69), Freiman (46.90), and Simpson (47.30) to swim 3:07.58 in the 400 Freestyle Relay, breaking Andover’s own pool record and again surpassing the All-American consideration standard.



Some other highlights from the two meets:



200 Medley Relay



On Friday, Jack Warden ’19 (24.82), Neil Simpson ’19 (26.45), Sam Donchi ’20 (23.47), and Lance Freiman ’19 (21.42) swam 1:36.16. On Saturday, Warden (24.62), Yubo Jin ’21 (26.77), Arnold Su ’20 (22.25), and Marcus Lee ’21 (22.03) swam 1:35.67.



In their respective splits, Harvey Zheng ’19 (BK 27.81), Jin, Rick Ono ’19 (BR 29.15), Su, Lee, Anthony Minickiello ’20 (FL 24.83), Riku Tanaka ’20 (FL 25.10), and Ralph Lam ’22 (23.14) all had best-ever times.



200 Freestyle

Donchi swam a best-ever time of 1:43.37. Max Fang ‘22 swam a season-best time of 1:54.19.



200 Individual Medley

Donchi again swam a best-ever time of 1:57.54. Simpson (1:56.26), Freiman (1:58.00), and Ono (2:07.76) each swam season-best times.



500 Freestyle

On Friday, Max Hunger ’20 (4:43.95), Minikiello (4:55.24), and Tanaka (4:57.18) went 1-2-3 against St. John’s. The triplet accomplished the same against Deerfield with Hunger (4:39.59) and Minickiello (4:51.62) going faster.



200 Freestyle Relay

Brendon Fang ’22 (24.02) and Hank Yang ’22 (24.17) both had best-ever splits.



100 Backstroke

Freiman (53.37), Ono (1:01.07), and Lam (1:01.35) each had best-ever times. Zheng (58.34) had a season-best time.



100 Breaststroke

Lee (1:00.38) had a best-ever time. Jin (1:00.28) and B. Fang (1:03.96) had season-best times.



400 Freestyle Relay

In addition to the squad that set the pool record, Hunger (47.87), Tanaka (50.33), Andy Xu ’19 (49.97), and Warden (48.82) swam 3:16.99. M. Fang (52.62), Minickiello (51.39), Ono (51.99), and Zheng (53.12) swam 3:29.12.



This was Xu’s first time under :50. Donchi, Hunger, Freiman, Ono all had season-best times.

Andover’s record now stands at 6-0, and the squad will next be in competition on Saturday, 9 February at the Hopkins School in New Haven.
