Matt Sapienza '21, L.J. Keevan '21, and Jacob Lapp '21 combined to limit Belmont Hill to just five hits and one run, while Jackson Emus '19 broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the top of the ninth, as Andover held on for a 3-1 extra-innings win.
The pitching was strong on both sides as Andover struck out 12, while Belmont Hill set down eight. LAPP (pictured) earned his first varsity win with two frames of stellar extra-innings relief, blanking Belmont Hill in the eighth and ninth, striking out five. Keevan added two and two-thirds innings in relief, moving from left field to the mound. Sapienza drew the start and allowed four hits and one run over four and a third strong innings, striking out three and walking none.
The score was knotted at 1-1 in the top of the ninth and darkness threatening when Emus doubled on the first pitch, plating Jack Penney ’21 and Andrew Ciufo ’19 after Ciufo was intentionally walked. Penney doubled home Peter Ling ’20 in the top of the third for Andover’s other run. Belmont Hill knotted the score 1-1 in the fifth.
Jack Palfrey ‘21, Ciufo, Penney, Emus, and Tristan Latham ’21 had one hit apiece to pace the offense. The defense was sure-handed all the while and didn't commit a single error, sparked by Ciufo at shortstop, who dove into the hole and gunned a long-hop strike across the diamond from shallow left field to help swing the momentum in Andover’s favor.
